Europe offers an elaborate range of different destinations where one can enjoy a houseboat holiday. Despite the various differences in the destinations, travelling with a houseboat reveals several similarities.
The term “houseboat” arises from the fact that these boats, in comparison to the simple and narrow sail boats, offer ample living space above and below deck. A fully equipped kitchen, a cosy living space, spacious sleeping quarters, showers and toilets are standard. Almost all houseboats additionally offer the “terrace” with deck tables and chairs; most have outdoor and indoor cockpits.
Consequently, most modern versions of these boats look like ships. Houseboating is a very comfortable form of travel. At only a few knots per hour, you meander along the wonderful river and channel landscapes allowing your thoughts to flow and your soul to be set free. You re-experience nature and become more relaxed yourself.
Most channels were built at the beginning of the early industrialisation, at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th Centuries. Shortly after they were finished, the triumphal procession of the railways began. For this reason, the small channels quickly lost their industrial importance and were able to develop into the nature reserves which houseboaters love.
Nor is culture missed out: magical villages, medieval towns and important cities lie along the channel routes. There are many cathedrals to see and many towers to climb. A stroll through the historic towns, people-watching from a street café, leaves one with a good impression of a country and its people.
Enjoy the culinary specialities of the individual regions in one of the small characteristic restaurants or even in a famous gourmet restaurant, from which there are ample to choose from along the way. But going to the markets and trying your own creations on board is also great fun.
You are shown the ins and outs of your boat at the start and are given any special information regarding your travel region. In addition, there are several houseboat instructors to assist you in your tour preparations.
